Dr. Nikhil Phadke
A few years ago, I lost my father to cancer. In spite of being a senior doctor himself, from a multi-generational medical family, with no lack of resources, I felt that the care he received was far from optimal. While he had some of the most wonderful and caring doctors treating him, I was left with the feeling that he suffered more than he needed to because there was no proper coordination between the various specialists and no central coordinating physician. For effective management of a cancer patient, I believe that it is essential for the medical oncologist, the onco-surgeon, the radiation oncologist, the pain management physician, the neuro-psychiatrist and the diet expert and a central coordinating physician to work closely together with the patient and the family to guide management. Recent advances in cancer care have complicated this even further with a need to integrate findings from molecular diagnostics and genetics into the treatment plan. In fact, this applies not just to cancer, but also to several other clinical specialties such as endocrinology, nephrology, cardiology, haematology, neurology and reproductive medicine.
With this in mind, we decided to found GeneClinicX to bring experts from all these areas to talk to each other and to our team of laboratory and clinical geneticists and counsellors to ensure that our patients get access to fully integrated care right from the start. It is my sincere hope that we can bring our patients the same level of care and personalised attention that my father and grandparents brought to their patients coupling it with all the newest advances in knowledge and technology.
